Identifying roof tiles from the Đại La and early Lê periods architecture in Thăng Long Capital

Abstract

The study and classification of roof tiles from the Đại La period and early Lê period architecture in the Thăng Long capital (Hà Nội) has long posed a challenge for archaeologists. Without correctly identifying the distinctive features of each period, roof tiles from the Đại La and early Lê periods are often mistaken for one another. Based on the available data, this paper identifes the key characteristics of roof tiles and their decorative components from the Đại La period and early Lê period architecture, focusing on their materials, colors, manufacturing techniques, forms, and decorative motifs. This comparative study aims to identify both the similarities and differences between roof tiles from the two periods. Initial findings show that tiles from the Đại La and early Lê periods share common features while also displaying distinct differences. The shared characteristics highlight the continuity of traditional roof tile production. The differences reflect the creativity and unique features of each period. The study of these roof tiles helps identify the architectural roof structures and provide deeper insights into Vietnamese cultural history during the Đại La and early Lê periods.
